Meeting #43
May 29, 2015

Hafa Adai, Pago Bay Guam Rotarians! Thank you for joining us this week, the last week of May! Did you know that late May typically marks the start of the summer vacation season that spans through months leading to Labor Day, the first Monday of September. I don’t know about you, but I am super excited about Summer!!!!

We begin Meeting #43 with Rotary’s Four-Way Test: Is it the Truth? Is it Fair to all concerned? Will it build Good Will and Better Friendships? Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

As Rotarians, we are reminded of the Object of Rotary:

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: (1) the development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; (2) high ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; (3) the application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life; (4) the advancement of goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons  united in the ideal of service.

The Unveiling of our Roadway Adoption Sign and Dedication took place on Wednesday, May 27 at 8:30 am.  Our vehicles lined alongside the road near Inalago Pago Bay for this special event. Our sign looks beautiful – thank you to the creative talent of Secretary John!!! Our eClub has been invited to participate in a couple of interviews regarding this endeavor, on radio and on tv. If you wish to participate, please let Membership Director Anita know before Monday!!! A great opportunity to live “Service Above Self” and educate our community about the mission of Rotary and the Rotary E-Club of Pago Bay Guam!!! See photos on our Facebook page!

We are especially grateful to Membership Director Anita and Treasurer Zeny who coordinated this effort with our community partner, Bascon Company.

Please plan to participate in our inaugural clean up of this stretch of road along Route 4 from Chalan Inda to Inalago Pago Bay – more information on this date is forthcoming. I would love to see you and your families there in full Rotary spirit and service!

Some upcoming events:

VP/PE Kris continues to plan our engagement with NIH/NIDDK STEP-UP as part of our commitment to sponsor the NIH/NIDDK Step Up Mini-Symposium tentatively scheduled for July 27th, highlighting the research that five high school students and one University of Guam undergraduate student will undertake. This symposium allows these students to shine, showing their parents and their peers what they have learned.  The undergraduate student and two high school students will then participate in a Symposium held at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, MD.  Lead Project Directors: VP/PE Kristina, Vocational and New Generations Committee Director Karen, and Rotarian Edward. We heard from two of these students at our last meeting.

We look forward to hearing about the Tree of Knowledge project in our upcoming meeting. PP Ron is attending conferences off-island, perhaps upon his return, this project will begin to take form.

SAVE THE DATE: June 12, 2015 – this is our First Year Charter Anniversary and Induction of new members!!! Details will be announced shortly.

If you have not already done so, please submit a short narrative about yourself and why you joined Rotary (100-200 words) with a picture to share.  Please send your submissions to Secretary John at johninguam@gmail.com.

We are continually identifying speakers or presenters on timely topics who are willing to contribute a written narrative or short video clip. The narrative should be 300-750 words and align with our topics of addressing the impoverished, reducing family violence, increasing education, entrepreneurship opportunities in our villages and how we might assist the homeless youth and children.  Please send your recommendations to VP/PE Kris at paksayama@gmail.com.

Rotary Minute: “WHATEVER ROTARY MAY MEAN TO US, TO THE WORLD IT WILL BE KNOWN BY THE RESULTS IT ACHIEVES.” —PAUL P. HARRIS

Rotary’s 1.2 million-member organization started with the vision of one man—Paul P. Harris. The Chicago attorney formed one of the world’s first service organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905 as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member. Program of Service: Pacific Island Small Business Development Center Network/Guam Small Business Development Center

The University of Guam Pacific Islands Small Business Development Center Network (PISBDCN) and the Guam Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is housed at the University of Guam School of Business and Public Administration. This center was opened in 1995. From 1999 through 2002 five additional centers were opened, creating the first international SBDC Network. Service Centers are located in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) namely the Yap, Chuuk & Kosrae State, Republic of Palau and Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands (CNMI). The local service centers are hosted by the respective state governments through contractual agreements with the PISBDCN. Service center offices are located in professional facilities or educational facilities. Each island has a distinct heritage, culture, belief system, language, national state identity, and legal system. Future expansion sites under consideration in the current strategic plan include Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) and Saipan in the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands (CNMI).

The University of Guam Pacific Islands Small Business Development Center Network's (PISBDCN) mission is to support the growth and economic development of the U.S. affiliated pacific islands in the western pacific region by providing high quality training and one-on-one confidential counseling to existing and prospective small businesses.

Casey Jeszenka is the Director of the Pacific Island Small Business Development Center/Guam Small Business Development Center. He provided the following links that will help to build a better understanding of the Center and its role in our region. Here is a three minute SBDC Intro Video that you can view on the PISBDCN/SBDC homepage at http://www.pacificsbdc.com/ or on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUElq6eIVDw. If you are interested in starting a small business on Guam or in the region, you may call 735-2590 to get more information or set up a meeting with one of the business counselors. A series of workshops are also available most of which are free to attend.

We appreciate the role of the Pacific Island Small Business Development Center Network and the Guam Small Business Development Center in supporting the development of entrepreneurial activities resulting in small business creation which serve to augment economic development on Guam and in our region.
