Meeting #46
June 19, 2015

Hafa Adai, Pago Bay Guam Rotarians! Thank you for joining us this week and a warm welcome to our newly inducted Rotarians: Roland Santos, Mae Arile, Christopher Cruz, Joey San Nicolas and Ed Artero! JUNE is ROTARY FELLOWSHIP MONTH and we look forward to engaging our spouses and families in some scheduled Rotary activities we have planned in the next few weeks.

We begin Meeting #46 with Rotary’s Four-Way Test: Is it the Truth? Is it Fair to all concerned? Will it build Good Will and Better Friendships? Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

As Rotarians, we are reminded of the Object of Rotary:

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: (1) the development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; (2) high ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; (3) the application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life; (4) the advancement of goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons  united in the ideal of service.

I want to express my deepest appreciation to all who helped to make our Charter Anniversary celebration a success! It was a nice evening of fellowship and celebration of the good work of Rotary. We inducted five new members and look forward to the contributions they will bring to our E-Club.

Special thank you to Treasurer Zeny and PP Ron for serving as members of the review and selection committee for the Rotary International District 2750 Friendship Scholarship – Rotary Club of Tokyo Chua. Congratulations to Arielle Taitano Lowe, as the recipient of the $10,000 Rotary Club of Tokyo Chuo Scholarship. Arielle is a junior at the University of Guam majoring in English, Literature and Chamorro Studies major.

Some upcoming events:

VP/PE Kris continues to plan our engagement with NIH/NIDDK STEP-UP as part of our commitment to sponsor the NIH/NIDDK Step Up Mini-Symposium tentatively scheduled for July 27th, highlighting the research that five high school students and one University of Guam undergraduate student will undertake. This symposium allows these students to shine, showing their parents and their peers what they have learned.  The undergraduate student and two high school students will then participate in a Symposium held at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, MD.  Lead Project Directors: VP/PE Kristina, Vocational and New Generations Committee Director Karen, and Rotarian Edward. We heard from two of these students at our last meeting.

“The tree that owns itself.” We look forward to hearing more about this project in our upcoming meeting. PP Ron is the lead for this project. You may contact him for more information at govguam@gmail.com.

Roadway Adoption Program Cleanup: Please plan to participate in our inaugural clean up of this stretch of road along Route 4 from Chalan Inda to Inalago Pago Bay – more information on this date is forthcoming. I would love to see you and your families there in full Rotary spirit and service!

If you have not already done so, please submit a short narrative about yourself and why you joined Rotary (100-200 words) with a picture to share.  Please send your submissions to Secretary John at johninguam@gmail.com.

We are continually identifying speakers or presenters on timely topics who are willing to contribute a written narrative or short video clip. The narrative should be 300-750 words and align with our topics of addressing the impoverished, reducing family violence, increasing education, entrepreneurship opportunities in our villages and how we might assist the homeless youth and children.  Please send your recommendations to VP/PE Kris at paksayama@gmail.com.

Rotary Minute, maybe more:
“June is designated Rotary Fellowship Month to recognize the importance of international fellowship and goodwill among Rotarians with similar recreational and vocational interests, promote increased participation in fellowships, and increase understanding of this program. The RI Board encourages these groups to celebrate Rotary Fellowships Month through projects, activities, and events. (RCP42.010.9.). MOP 2013.

What are the benefits for Rotarians in joining the Rotary Fellowships? Fellowship provides opportunities for Rotarians to make lasting friendships outside their own Club, District or country. There are many Fellowships that would be of interest to our members, and they are detailed on www.rotary.org/fellowships.  You may find many extensive activities of the Rotary Fellowships that your profession, business or industry area has already established. If not, why not think about starting one yourself! Fellowships contribute to the advancement of world understanding and peace. Interested Rotarians can join a Rotary Fellowship by clicking: Rotary Fellowships Handbook (729) or even start a prospective Rotary Fellowship if their recreational or vocational interest is not in the list of approved Rotary Fellowships. The Rotary Fellowships are expected to facilitate communication among their members and maintain regular communication with RI.

The month of June is considered as Rotary Fellowship Month in the
Rotary calendar. There is a misconception among Rotarians on what aspect
of the RI programs is being celebrated for this month of June. To clarify, when we talk about "Rotary Fellowships", we actually refer to the groups of Rotarians, Rotarian spouses and Rotaractors who join together to:
  1. Share a common interest in worthwhile recreational activities (sports, hobbies, etc.);
  2. Further their vocational development through acquaintance with others of the same profession;
  3. Make new friends around the world;
  4. Explore new opportunities for service; and
  5. Have fun and enhance their experience in Rotary.

Examples of Rotary Fellowships include: Rotarians on the Internet (ROTI),
International Fellowship of Rotarians of Amateur Radio (ROAR), International Computer Users Fellowship of Rotarians (ICUFR), International Fellowship of Rotary Convention Goers, International Golfing Fellowship of Rotarians, International Fellowship of Rotarians Musicians, Rotary Global History Fellowship, etc.

The field is so varied, which includes marathon running, scuba diving, flying, bird watching, chess, doll lovers, environment, Esperanto, go, gourmets, lawyers, magic, nurses, police and law enforcement professionals, recreational vehicles, singles, stockbrokers, venture capitalists, wine and yoga.

Each Rotary Fellowship operates independently of Rotary International, with its own rules, dues requirements and administrative structure. Membership is open to Rotarians, spouses of Rotarians and Rotaractors. It must be international in nature with active members in at least three (3) countries. Each fellowship elects at least three (3) officers to oversee the group's administration. The Rotary Fellowships are expected to facilitate communication among their members and maintain regular communication with RI.

What are the benefits for Rotarians in joining the Rotary Fellowships? Fellowship provides opportunities for Rotarians to make lasting friendships outside their own Club, District or country. Fellowships contribute to the advancement of world understanding and peace. Also, Fellowships serve as an incentive for attracting new members to Rotary and retaining our existing members. Indeed, Rotary Fellowship, together with the Rotarian Action Groups, serve as an effective tool in promoting membership development and should be actively promoted in our Districts.
