Meeting #37
April 17, 2015

Hafa Adai, Pago Bay Guam Rotarians! Thank you for joining us this week! We begin Meeting #37 with Rotary’s Four-Way Test:
As Rotarians, we are reminded of the Object of Rotary:

Hafa Adai Pago Bay Guam Rotarians!

The week of April 12-18 was a busy one. The Presidents-Elect Training Seminar was held on April 16-17. This was kicked off with a cocktail reception at the Hilton Gallery Room on the evening of April 15. I had a chance to meet with District Governor Mizuno and other district members. During PETS, the administrative elements of running a Rotary E-Club became clearer. The ReC Pago Bay Guam Board is working very closely with ADG Mary and RC Tumon Bay Rotarian Frank Crisostomo-Kiaaihue to understand more deeply our Club requirements and responsibility. I believe we are going to meet our goals of setup before the end of our Rotary year.

On Saturday, April 18, Treasurer-Elect Goody, Director Anita and I along with two Rotary candidates attended RC Guam’s 75th Charter Anniversary at the Hilton garden grounds. It was a festive and beautiful event featuring RI President Gary Huang with very inspiring speech. We learned the happy clap and a few Taiwanese lines.

Director Anita and Treasurer Zeny have moved the Road Adoption Project forward in partnership with Bascon Company. We look forward to planning a dedication ceremony shortly. Thereafter, we will schedule our clean up of the stretch of road along Route 4 from Chalan Inda to Inalago Pago Bay. Stay tuned for this upcoming announcement.

A meeting with NIH/NIDDK STEP-UP representatives: Lawrence Agadoa, Director of Minority Health Research Coordination, National Institute of Health/National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disorders and Dr. George Hui, Professor, University of Hawaii, Department of Tropical Medicine and Director, Pacific STEP-UP - which took place on Thursday, April 16 at the Hilton Hotel. In attendance were VP/PE Kris, Secretary John and PP Ron.  Recall, our E-Club voted to sponsor a Mini-Symposium tentatively scheduled for July 27th, highlighting the research that five high school students and one University of Guam undergraduate student will undertake. This symposium allows these students to shine, showing their parents and their peers what they have learned.  The undergraduate student and two high school students will then participate in a Symposium held at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, MD.  Lead Project Directors: VP/PE Kristina, Vocational and New Generations Committee Director Karen, and Rotarian Edward.

Our Club needs volunteers to organize the Dictionary Reading Project, to promote literacy by encouraging elementary students (target group = fourth graders) to utilize their dictionaries in reading activities. Please send your interest to Secretary John.
If you have not already done so, please submit a short narrative about yourself and why you joined Rotary (100-200 words) with a picture to share.  Please send your submissions to Secretary John.

We are continually identifying speakers or presenters on timely topics who are willing to contribute a written narrative or short video clip. The narrative should be 300-750 words and align with our topics of addressing the impoverished, reducing family violence, increasing education, entrepreneurship opportunities in our villages and how we might assist the homeless youth and children.  Please send your recommendations to VP/PE Kris.

April is Rotary Magazine month. See what President Huang has to say about Magazine month at this link: https://www.rotary.org/myrotary/en/member-news/office-president/presidential-message. His message highlights the importance of sharing the story of Rotary and how the magazine had many years ago and today, continues to spread awareness of Rotary.
