Rotary Meeting #12
February 19, 2016
 
Hafa Adai, Pago Bay Guam Rotarians! Thank you for joining us for this week’s meeting.  I would also like to welcome our guests and those interested in becoming members.
 
As with all Rotary meetings, we begin Meeting #12 with Rotary’s Four-Way Test: 
 
 
Is it the Truth?
 Is it Fair to all Concerned?
Will it build Good Will and Better Friendships?
Will it be Beneficial to all Concerned?
 
 As Rotarians, we are reminded of the Object of Rotary:
 
 
The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: (1) the development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; (2) high ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; (3) the application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life; (4) the advancement of goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons  united in the ideal of service.
 
 
Meeting:
 
The theme for the month of February is Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution.  In this month’s Rotarian, the work of Rotary Peace Fellows actively engaged in “Acts of Peace” is highlighted.  At the Rotary Grants Workshop that was held for incoming Presidents in January, I learned of opportunities that our club can apply for to make contributions within our community through projects related to:  education; water and sanitation; health; economic development; and peace.  As active members of our club, we should each suggest one or two ideas of how our club can make a difference in our community – after getting some inspiration from this month’s Rotarian, please send me your ideas.
 
Our Board has been actively working to reach out to each of our members regarding the membership dues.  Membership dues need to be paid ASAP to Treasurer Zeny or Treasurer-Elect Goody for our club to meet our obligation towards Rotary International and District.
 
Although our club does not “physically” meet weekly, participating in weekly club meetings allows members to enjoy fellowship, enrich their professional and personal knowledge, and meet other leaders in our community.  Please calendar the date of February 20 at 6:15 p.m for our call-in meeting (details included in this week’s email).  One of the agenda items includes election of Board Officers for 2016-2017.
 
President Annette has received nominations for the following positions on the Board:  Vice President/President Elect; Secretary; Vocational and New Generations Committee Director; and Sergeant-at-Arms.  Nominations are still being sought for the following positions: Treasurer; Fundraising Committee Director; International and Community Service Committee Director; Membership Committee Director; and Public Relations Committee Director. All members in good standing are highly encouraged to express an interest in one of these positions. At the heart of Rotary is Service through active participation in our club leadership, in local and international service projects, club members can volunteer their time and talents where they are most needed.
  
Announcements:
 
Rotary District Conference: February 23 and February 24 in Tokyo, Japan.  Each Rotary club from our District will be making a short presentation.  Clubs that have received funding from the Rotary Foundation will also be providing updates.
 
Call for Applications for Rotary Peace Fellowship applications:  As found on the website rotarypeacecenters.@rotary.org, Rotary Peace Fellows are leaders who promote national and international cooperation and peace in their careers and throughout their lives. The Rotary Peace Fellowship offers qualified individuals the opportunity to earn either a master’s degree or a professional development certificate in peace and conflict resolution.
 
A Rotary Peace Fellowship funds study at one of the six Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution, located at seven prestigious universities worldwide.  Applicants for Rotary Peace Fellowships should have:
• A bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a related field, with strong grades at the time of application
• A minimum of three years full-time (paid or unpaid) work experience for the master’s degree program and a minimum of five years (paid or unpaid) for the professional development certificate program
• Proficiency in a second language (degree) or in English (certificate)
• A commitment to international understanding and peace, demonstrated through professional and academic achievements and personal and community service activities
• Excellent leadership skills
